The announcement came after trade talks between the two countries broke down the week before.
Both sides claimed the other had made unreasonable demands, preventing them from reaching an agreement.
“We did make some progress in recent weeks,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said to the press on Aug. 24.
“In the end, that momentum reversed, and we could not accept what the U.S. had offered, nor could we give what they asked.”
U.S. Vice President JD Vance blamed Canada for the collapse of the talks, saying Canada had made unacceptable last-minute demands and needed to stop taking advantage of the United States.
According to The New York Times, negotiations went smoothly during their early stages.
Canada proposed a “Fortress North America” plan that would significantly reduce existing tariffs between the two countries while creating a trade barrier against countries outside North America, such as China, by raising tariffs.
The U.S. proposed lowering tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, and automobiles while eliminating tariffs on lumber.
However, the countries remained divided over key details, including the extent of reductions in auto tariffs.
Another major issue was “sovereignty.”
U.S. officials demanded the right to review and, to some extent, influence future trade agreements Canada might make.
For Carney’s government, which sought to reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the United States, the demand was unacceptable.
With major issues unresolved, Carney eventually halted the talks.
After the talks collapsed, the U.S. imposed 50% tariffs on certain Canadian products, affecting $20 billion worth of Canadian goods.
Canada responded by announcing retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports.
Carney said the United States would face a “dollar-for-dollar” response, with Canada’s list covering more than 700 items, from hockey sticks to toilet paper.
Top Canadian officials rallied behind the prime minister.
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said that Canada remained “masters of our own home.”
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly encouraged Canadians to support domestic businesses by choosing locally made products amid the escalating trade conflict.",

"title" => "U.S.-Canada Trade War Escalates Following 50% Tariff Blast",
"context_text" => "On Aug. 24, United States President Donald Trump announced a staggering 50% tariff on automobiles and auto parts manufactured in Canada starting next year.
