The robbery occurred at about 9:50 p.m. on Aug. 15 at the Regional Museum of Messina, known as MuMe.
Investigators believe the thieves took advantage of the commotion caused by the La Vara, a colossal religious procession held annually on the Ferragosto national holiday.
While authorities and large crowds focused on celebrations far from the museum, the group began their heist.
According to detectives, the group cut through a metal fence along Viale Annunziata, forced open a side door, and entered the museum.
Although alarms and security cameras were operating, the thieves still broke through an armored glass display case and escaped with the artworks.
Officials estimated their total value at 70 million to 80 million euros, or about $81 million to $92 million.
The stolen works include three tempera-on-wood panels from the 1473 “San Gregorio Polyptych,” which was created for the monastery of Santa Maria extra moenia.
The thieves also took a small, double-sided painting showing the Madonna and Child with a Franciscan monk on one side and Christ in Pietà on the other.
The polyptych is particularly important because it was the only major work by Antonello to survive the devastating 1908 Messina earthquake without serious damage.
Two of its panels depicting Saint Benedict and Saint Gregory were later found near a low outer wall, likely abandoned by the thieves during their escape.
Culture Minister Alessandro Giuli and Sicilian Regional President Renato Schifani condemned the theft and called for immediate reviews of museum security.
The Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage, a specialized art-crime unit, took over the investigation.
Authorities are examining how the thieves entered the museum, broke the display case, and escaped despite the security systems.
They are also investigating possible weaknesses in patrols, staffing, and emergency response procedures.
Art crime experts say the stolen artworks would be difficult to sell openly because they are well-documented.
The question now on everyone’s mind is whether a private collector had commissioned the theft or an organized criminal group took the works as collateral.
“It is an extremely serious and significant loss,” said museum director Marisa Mercurio.
“They have stolen works of enormous cultural, artistic and symbolic importance, not only for Messina but for Sicily as a whole.
All we can do now is hope they are recovered as soon as possible.”",

"context_text" => "Italian authorities are searching for thieves who stole four Renaissance artworks by 15th-century master Antonello da Messina from a Sicilian museum during a public holiday.
